In 2010 more than 300 people showed up for National Night Out in Winslow. The city expects even more to join the festivities this year, which will be held Tuesday August 2nd from 6 to 9 p.m. Participants at Town Square will enjoy free hotdogs, beverages, popcorn, ice cream, cake, and cookies provided by local merchants. The Hometown Band will provide entertainment.
The goals of National Night Out are to
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
- Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs.
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
- Send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Last year the event featured a dunk tank with a “sitting” judge and police officer.
The 2010 National Night Out campaign involved 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated.
Chief of Police John Feldman expressed his desire for citizens to get to know his officers and added, “National Night Out on Bainbridge Island is an event we enjoy celebrating with our citizens.” The event also provides an opportunity for local nonprofit organizations, merchants, and business organizations to share information with attendees.
Local contributors to the event so far include Sears and Associates, West Sound Wildlife Shelter, Boys and Girls Club, Bainbridge Island Ambulance Service, Kids Discovery Museum, My Kids’ Cookies, Helpline House, Bainbridge Island Fire Department, Bainbridge Island Athletic Club, Oil and Water, Bainbridge Island Sportsman’s Club, Bainbridge Amateur Radio Club, Town and Country Market, Safeway, Ace Hardware, Bainbridge Cinemas, Paper Products, Mora Iced Creamery, and Blackbird Bakery.
